Understanding and Fixing Peeling Window Tint: Insights from 30 Years of Experience

window tint peeling

We’ve all seen it: bubbling or window tint peeling on the back window of cars or even on home windows. It’s frustrating, isn’t it? As someone who has spent over 30 years in the window tinting business, I can assure you that window tint peeling is a common issue—but it doesn’t have to be your reality.

TLDR: At Matt Bull Window Tinting, we only use the best quality films specifically engineered for Australia, particularly tailored to withstand the harsh conditions in Queensland. So when push comes to shove, you’ll know that you can rely on the promises that the manufacturer makes and that your jobs will stand the test of time because of superior expertise at our end. We deserved every one of our almost 3,000 5-star reviews!

Why Does Window Tint Peeling Happen?

Delaminating window tint films can stem from several factors, the main four are below. It’s important to understand them so you can avoid costly mistakes.

The first two are the main reasons for film failure. These are the big ones because they are the most controllable parts of the process.

The second 2 are more environmental. The poorer installers will blame failure on the sun. But if you choose an operator who uses the best tools of the trade, your products should be able to honour their warranties which mostly last the product’s lifetime!

So, What are the Common Causes of Window Tint Peeling and Bubbling?

So, with that in mind, here’s a list of the most common reasons you might get peeling of your window tint:

1. Poor Installation

One of the biggest culprits is improper installation. When a film job is rushed or incorrectly done, it can lead to bubbling and peeling. If the window surface isn’t thoroughly cleaned before applying the tint, it can trap dirt and dust under the film, weakening the adhesive.

At Matt Bull Window Tinting, we use the best materials so that we never have to redo a job… However, the number of jobs that come from poor products (especially on cars, and particularly when purchased through a car yard or car dealership) is frankly, staggering. I’m left scratching my head at how these shonky operators get away with it.

When you come to 1300 Get Tint we start with the best foundations, so whatever you do, choose the right tint shop so you can 100% ensure your window film job is done right. Time for a shameless plug for our business. Call us on 0400 700 154.

2. Low-Quality Films

While some companies may use good quality films, they often fall short on adhesive quality. At Matt Bull Window Tinting, we only use superior films with superior adhesives that are engineered to last. Many other companies overlook this crucial element, leading to premature peeling. I’m wondering whether people think that it’s normal for tints to lift or bubble.

3. Environmental Factors

Prolonged exposure to UV rays and extreme temperatures can break down the adhesive over time. In Queensland, the sun’s intensity can be brutal. But, honestly, your installer would have had to be starting with a bonding agent that is not fit for purpose. At 1300 Get Tint, our films are expressly designed to combat these harsh conditions, and provide you with long-lasting protection.

4. Age of the Tint

Deteriorating or old films can also be a reason for peeling. Even high-quality films may eventually need to be replaced, but with the right care, you can maximize the lifespan of your new tint film. It also stands to reason that older tints used older technology and advances in durability, scratch resistance, solar energy reduction are improving tinting film quality as we speak.

How to Prevent Window Film Peeling and Bubbles

Prevention is always better than cure. That’s why it’s better to prevent peeling, and air bubbles in the first place by always getting expert installation. Here are some tips to help you avoid the common pitfalls of window film peeling:

  • Choose a Reputable Tinting Service: Always opt for experienced professionals who use high-quality tint films and who go the extra mile when applying the film. It’s by far the best way to reduce the chances of failure. At Matt Bull Window Tinting, we ensure that every installation is done right the first time.
  • Proper Installation: Make sure your window film is installed correctly. This means thorough cleaning of the glass, using the right tools, the best adhesives, and allowing sufficient drying time.
  • Select Quality Films: Invest in window films that are specifically engineered for your environment. Our films are made for the Australian market, and address the unique challenges that Queenslanders face.
  • Avoid Direct Sunlight: After installation (while curing), try to park your car in the shade or use a car cover to protect the car window tint from excessive heat.
  • Regular Maintenance: Clean your tinted windows with gentle cleaning agents and soft cloths. Avoid ammonia-based cleaners, which can degrade the tint.

What to Do If Your Tint Starts Peeling

If you notice peeling or bubbling in your window film, here’s how to fix it:

  1. Assess the Damage: If it’s a minor issue, you might be able to reapply glue or carefully cut away the damaged portion with a razor blade. For larger areas, it’s usually best to remove the old tint and replace it with new film.Seriously, I’d suggest jumping to point 2 first because while you can do a bodge job of “fixing” the problem, perhaps you should see what the professionals would do. For example, you would be best to see if whatever damage there is might be covered under a warranty. If it is, then you’ll be expecting replacement.
  2. Consult a Professional: If you’re unsure, reach out to a trusted tinting service. At Matt Bull Window Tinting, we can quickly evaluate the situation and provide expert advice on the best course of action.
  3. Follow Proper Procedures: If attempting a DIY fix, ensure you clean the window thoroughly and use a high-quality adhesion layer designed for window films. Make sure to wet the window and the film before reapplying to achieve a good bond.

Are All Warranties the Same?

Over the years I have had to replace tinting work that other operators have applied. A couple of brands come to mind that have so-called Lifetime Warranties but these may not be truly covering the product’s lifetime. Two particular brands that I don’t install will only allow you to replace the product just one time. Ring us on 0400 700 154, and we’ll happily share our experiences. One thing I can do is vouch 100% for the products that we use, that are mainly the Express Window Films and also the 3M films. But it’s the Express films that are Australian made and made “expressly” (love the pun?) for Australian conditions.
